No more WoW item selling in eBay

Well it’s been a while since we posted about games, so here is a bit of news for the online WoW game fans, probably sad however. eBay will soon be disallowing virtual game items selling on their site to avoid possible legal actions from companies such as Blizzard. eBay is saying that this is for the for the overall health of the market place.

Not that I encourage the idea, but if the buyer and seller are happy, I think the only logical reason for disallowing it  is really possible lawsuits from game publishers concerned about people using their intellectual property to make profit. Even though if I was in their shoes, I can only see it brining more and more customers. Seller will keep playing to sell more, and buyer will keep playing for what he paid for! Anyways, disallowing virtual items is expected to take place next month.

On a different topic, also in the online games however, online game developer WildTangent is talking about the challenges facing online game developers to get their games working on Windows Vista. Vista seems to be incompatible with many of the downloadable games from Yahoo, RealArcade, AOL, and even the MSN Games as it self as well. I don’t know about you, but for me, if it doesn’t have games, then it’s not good.

I’m not surprised buddy!

That should mean more and more businesses to other major websites that currently handles such transactions, try http://www.offgamers.com for instance, that should show you how a network of kids from China led by a mastermind businessman can “Bring home the Bacon”.

That brings to mind how AO (Anarchy Online) for instance faced the same issue long time ago and still face it, it started its campaign of banning users for trafficking money (selling in-game credits) some years ago under the claim that anything in the game is their property, I’ve seen many of my online friends and Guild-mates go down for that, now look at AO’s current position (http://www.anarchy-online.com/content/downloads/tryout/),it is officially begging all those who quit years ago to come back for 30-90 days free just to give the game a second chance, I remember when I quit they typed in bold font that my character and all items I’ve invested time and effort to get will be deleted soon if I don’t reactivate my account within 3 months and now (5 years after that) they claim its still there waiting for me. So AO when you dominated the market you treated the users real bad, now its time for the players to laugh about it!

Morale of the story is: MMORPGs (Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Games) just like any games out there, people WILL eventually get sick of it, be it few years or mere months people will soon enough realize that they are chasing the carrot at the end of the stick with level-ing and in-game items collection. The only reason I am still playing WoW (World of Warcraft) is my real-life friends are playing the game and their continuous demands for me keep playing as I was the one who invited them to check it out!

Add to that the fact that SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) went downhill when they changed the game play due to the WoW threat in the market effectively KILLING the last few of its players who were still loyal. I’ll talk more in detail about that in a later post and what I honestly think of both Sony Entertainment & Lucas Arts current direction, specially the latter company that I USED to like!

As for Vista, It will be quite a while before I think about switching to Microsoft’s OS as I know Bill’s main target wasn’t my convenience as a user as much as how can he protect his new shiny OS from being cracked and offered for free on a friendly Bittorrent site near you! Yes piracy is WRONG and it harms small developers but not Microsoft, I can tell you that much!

DeadEye Out!
