WikiSearch?
Wikipedia, the world’s largest community developed encyclopedia have announced they will be launching their own search engine next year, with 5% market share target. The new search engine, to be called Wikiasari (weard name), will base it’s success on human based factor of sites ranking. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, aims by doing this to get better search related results that are spam-free, compared to what some searches on Google return. The search engine will be an open source as well (I should get my hands on that), and the index is to be released under GFDL. More here with exclusive screenshots.
While 5% might seem like a small target to achieve, it definitely won’t be easy to reach at all, and if they do succeed in that, I believe it will be the first to make that jump over the past few years. Manual ranking of sites from all over the world may seem impossible, but when I look at how large the Wikipedia have gotten, and how it became the primary source of information for many, Google should be ready for possible tough fight next year. I expect some drawbacks at the begin of the launch at least. I assume first thing is non-English sites will suffer in the beginning. How can non-Arabic reader for example decide the quality of those sites. You need Arabic readers for that. Same applies for other languages ofcourse. Another thing is that, ranking will be affected by links to them from Wikipedia, this will cause some good sites who don’t have strong references in the Wikipedia to suffer and fall down, and on the other hand, encourage more spam in the Wikipedia itself. We saw how Microsoft is trying to buy out public opinion on the Wikipedia, and with search results being based on it as well, more and more people will try to find smarter ways of spamming the Wiki world.

Looking at it as we speak, but I don’t want a kroms.wordpress.com. I want something like http://www.kroms.com – a domain name. Found some free ones, am comparing them.
I’m expanding, see :) Kroms will be a much more reliable blog when I’m done with the current re-design.
