Gmail Size Upgrade?

2004 Google announced they will introduce their GMail service to the world. Just another email service? Google proved it’s not. While other email providers were proudly granting few mega bytes per user, Google have raised the bar to 1 GB!. Something that have left competitors in a very bad shape. One year later, Yahoo announced they are upgrading their users to 1 GB. Google soon spoiled the evening however once again announcing another 1 GB to their users, and counting. Ever since, your GMail inbox size keeps increasing by second. Google had some concept in mind about the GMail:

- Never again delete an email: Which is why the delete button needed a manual to find in the beginning, Firefox extension was built to place easy to find delete button, until Google knew even with unlimited size people still like to delete some emails.

- Don’t Sort, Search: Best said. I used to sort my emails by different criteria to find the email I want. With Gmail, I search within fraction of seconds all my mails. I tested it against new Yahoo! Mail Beta, which is also very good, and GMail search was much faster.

The two concept have proven them selves times and times over, and I never again want to live without them. One thing sad however is that my Gmail size is reaching 63% of the 2828 MB, and I keep growing in used size at much faster rate than GMail does, and I think many others do. I hate to delete anything, Gmail is my reference now for old history. I wonder however if they will be providing us any large upgrades soon, now that it’s almost reaching it’s 3rd year. Otherwise, I either have to delete some emails or create new account. With GMail just opening for the public, they probably are not in a good position to provide extra upgrades. Some people however have already created extra accounts so it’s the same thing at the end. It’s just added over head for the end user to look into two different places, and it will kill gradually the never delete another email concept.

It’s not so much the idea of bigger space. Google wants people to use Gmail because their targeted ads gets them more revenue.

Plus, they have all these emails on their servers that they can analyze and improve their software with.

Well, it’s a WIN-WIN for me. Gmail is far much better than any other email I’ve tried. If they are making money through it so be it, given ocourse that customer privacy is preserved.
