Numbers looking good for PS3
The January NPD data report on console and game sales in the US has been released, and PS3 sales have not only surpassed Xbox 360 with 269,000 units compared to 230,000, but it is also going Wii a real chase up with 6,000 units difference only! It’s true ofcourse, Xbox 360 has been in the market for quite some time, and Wii has been selling like candy all the time. On the other, considering the price difference between a PS3 and a Wii, for me this counts as PS3 is outselling right now.
Meanwhile, rumors are spreading of next generations of the Wii and Xbox 360 in 2010. With the delay Sony had in releasing PS3, I think the will have their own show in the next release, probably 2012. But then again, they might enjoy knowing their enemy tactics and countering them.
PS3′s main problem remains so far however, and that is lacking killer apps and exclusive games. Wii is fun for family, Xbox 360 has many exclusive games, and with strong internet multi-player support, while in PS3, and coming from Anti-Microsoft guy, still lacks the games that brings people to it. I am personally downloading many playable demos I find, and I hardly find ay worth of spending $60 on. Call of Duty? Well that’s not exclusive. MGS? Fans are still waiting! I know some people might be loving some games there but there isn’t just enough variety, and the lack of multi-player games there makes it less helpful in gatherings.
This Add-on device that will let PS3 users watch digital TV via their consoles might bring more value to it. There is a video demo of the device if you like. But for me, last week I knew I didn’t waste my money on the PS3 after I watch the first Blu Ray version episode of what I think is the best planet documentary ever made.
Watch the trailer and you will know what I mean.

Actually, the reason behind the sales of PS3 is that both Nintendo and Microsoft reported shortages during the month of January and couldn’t ship as many consoles to retailers to meet the monthly demand (especially the Wii), while PS3 was in excess stock at retailers. Another reason that contributed the increase (and maybe many months to come) is the sudden switch from HD to Blue-ray by the industry and many people will buy PS3 for that factor. If you checked the NPD numbers for software, PS3 sales are a little sluggish.
Excellent post.
I think PS3 was hyped to the max (remember stock running our and people fighting over them at stores etc) but once gamers realized that the PS3 did not include any ‘wow’ product with it (nothing on the level of a HALO which *helped* sell more Xbox’s than any other game) the PS3 began to tumble, the cost of the machine to Sony was around 700 dollars per unit even though they were selling cheaper, BluRay was struggling against HD, etc – now that Sony has figured out a much cheaper method of producing the PS3 and HD is practically dead (as you mentioned) then sales for PS3 are bound to increase.
Moving on to games, there are some great games like UNCHARTED: DRAKES CROSSING and RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN (which was released around the PS3′s time) but they are not enough to sell the machine – however, once you use realize that the PS3 is indeed an *excellent* BluRay player, that is where thins change dramatically and make the PS3 a must own machine.
I bought a BluRay FANTASTIC FOUR 2 disc just to check out the quality, downloaded all patches/firmware wirelessly for the PS3 (this is HIGHLY IMPORTANT) and connected it to a 1080p Samsung monitor and the image looked absolutely amazing – a hige difference from DVD, and I felt an improvement over regular HD as well (but you need the 1080p monitor).
Im using the PS3 these days as a Bluray machine mostly.
Hmmm a year ago we heard about a rumor agreement under the table between Microsoft and Sony that Sony will delay the releases of UBER games to 2008 till Xbox 360 holds some ground!! I see 2008 and see expected titles on the boom, so is the rumor true! If booming titles do flow to market for PS3 its definitely GG for Xbox 360 so we will have to wait and see if the PS3 will be a success story as the PS2. Another point is whys is wii included in the comparison?! Its not a high end game console, its a great fun console but definitely not high-end
PS3 reached the million mark in the UK faster than the PS2 did.
Planet Earth is incredible! We have such a beautiful planet, we just never bother to know that.

Numbers looking good for PS3…
PS3 is surpassing Xbox 360 in sales in the US, and closing up on the Wii. Still lacking killer apps, Sony will released add-on to allow digital TV watching through your console.
Also, don’t miss the video at end of the page….
