Follow Google on Twitter

Google on Twitter

If you’re into the Twitter world, you may want to follow Google, which just joined yesterday and had already lined up 23,327 followers at the time of this writing, bringing you latest in Google news. How do we tell it’s authentic? Matt Cutts was quoted on Twitter saying “Yes, @google is the official Google account on Twitter. It went from 1500 followers to 15K followers overnight. Follow @google“.

Now I wonder if the join at this time has anything to do with the Gmail blackout that happened few days ago, after it became apparent how Twitter is the first place people would exchange information on, and Matt Cutts apparently wasn’t there at the time to respond on the spot “Yes, I’m up. Nope, I don’t know any more about #Gmail than you. Gmail folks tend to use their blog though–I’d keep an eye there.

So with more people talking about the problem there, not everyone would go and check Google blog. Twitter is turning out even for a company like Google as a very valuable asset to promote and reach out.

I stopped using twitter when they stopped sending SMS updates to Kuwait. because the whole idea is it being a platform to microblog on the move ..

In the email that they announced this, I remember them saying that they have to make deals with mobile carriers in all countries for lowered prices so that they can continue to deliver the updates to users in these countries.. That’s why, I doubt ( but wish) that twitter will resume delivering updates to Kuwait ..

and about google joining twitter, that’s just another cool/informative/useful thing that we’re missing because we don’t have twitter here ..

MrMMM: I totally agree. SMS was the killer behind the concept, but you’re in Kuwait likely for a long time :), so this is least worse perhaps

I hate twitter for no particular reason.

MacaholiQ8: Well it could be used for more than I’m drinking a cup of tea. Though SMS was a big part of it I still miss it.

I guess it’s a way to cover up their butts after users’ accounts got hijacked. Twice.

I tried Twitter for a while but didn’t like it. One of the reasons is that the comments posted don’t get attached to the original post they target.

For example, you make a blog post, those on twitter will comment, but those comments never get attached to your blog post.

This was something that made me close my account because I want all comments to technical posts I make to be in one place for anyone following a certain topic. It doesn’t make sense to say that for you to see other comments, you need to *also* check on twitter.

MBH: Yeah I totally agree on that. Though commenting back on twitter for blog post is wrong I guess in the first place. I see it more for sharing info, links. Comments should be on the post it self.

Following some people like Matt Cutts always brings useful info. And then there is also the extra added value of letting the whole world know you’re drinking a cup of coffee right now! :P

never tried it, some of these services i think it’s for people that have allot of free time not for people who own a business or run a high position in a company.

but i think for news and other updates it might be cool i don’t know. so far, i think blog is the best way to read about what you are interested and reach other people.

i also agree with bashar regarding blog comments, not every comment i want it to be posted in my blog.

Ali: I agree Twitter can be a time waster. I also had your same thought about not joining it. But it’s also a way to find links to the latest news, not read them obviously. Also, you can build your community and use it for reach out. If Google joins, has to be something in it :)

what’s wrong with twittering “having tea” ??

The idea of twitter, is what are you doing??

Twitter is one innovative service, lots of products are built upon it!!

SMS is really useful, but another way, is most have mobile with Internet access … less convenient but it’s a workaround …

follow ppl you like and be followed by ppl you approve of …

it’s progressing in different ways, eventually everyone will use it as s/he sees fit …

Bashar, do we really need to follow Google, when we follow you and read your blog ;)

maryam: My point was there is a real beneficial use, and a fun social one for it. Some people find it time wasting as I thought it would be when it could be really beneficial. The SMS part was the most useful and sadly gone.

I’m using it as you see for things similar to coffee drinking, for keeping updated on others, and it’s also a source of on the spot info and answers in a way I never thought would be.

My blog… Well I admit, my Googleholic days are long gone. My blog is too slow these days. You should’ve seen me 2 years a go, I used to bore people to death about Google!
