There is an open source project which does what MS Surface do and it is based on Xorg.

I don’t remember its name nor what happened to it now, but it was functioning properly at that time.

It was featured on Slashdot.

Bashar : I was thinking how it can be done . I think it is easy if you think it is all about image recognition like the sensor in his hand have have the sensing of 4 different colors plus the product .
