After it was bigger hit than bigger Disney head expected, they decided it's trilogy, screwed the story up, tied William and Elizabeth in a locked-loop. Then decided they can't give up such a good movie (money making one), so they quickly decided to try another hit. I heard Johnny Depp first asked for sky rocket payment, which may have delayed the production. Alas, producer and/or direction may change.
