If you’ve ever used Mac or Linux, and if you’re a heavy user with dozens of open windows, you most likely have come to admire the simple cool feature that allows you to use your mouse scroll wheel to scroll the open windows in the back, without clicking and bringing them to the front. This is pretty useful when you’re reading a document or article, which relates to say your open code editor in the front. Â For some reason however, even with Windows7, Microsoft still failed to realize and copy this simple feature.

Luckily, little Googling revealed the lightweight WizMouse tool which does simply and exactly just that. I’m usually very reluctant to installing softwares that interfere with the OS and run in the background, especially on Windows. But this one seems quite light, and is extremely handy, I don’t think any Windows user should live without it.

My favorite program for reading PDF documents has been Foxit Reader for sometime. My inlaw however showed me this PDF-XChange Viewer which has different levels of licenses, you can get the basic version for FREE. What’s great about this software, besides being light and fast to load, is the ability it gives you for editing your PDF documents with labels, signs, hyperlink areas and much more. It even allows you to create a new PDF document from scratch through a nice editor. Some features are only in the Pro version though, or otherwise label your document with “Demo” words.

It takes long time, and the progress count is not accurate at all then. Another thing is that, for all the strength it has, it remains a web browser and thus it’s more resource intensive.

Â

Â

Another nice option was WinSCPÂ Windows FTP client as well. Pretty good for SFTP and updating files on the fly, and it even has a terminal for firing up commands the old fashioned way. You can also change file permissions right from the editor through a GUI interface.

Â

The latest FTP Client I’m using and finding also so much attractice is the FileZilla. It is also capable of SFTP, file updates, and file permission changing. It does not come with a command terminal however. The good thing on the other hand is, FileZilla is an open source, multi-platform client so you can get used to it and use it every where.

Â

Which one is your favorite?

One of the most time consuming practices when I want to start a program is going to Start -> Programs (waiting for windows to show up) and then searching for my program. Instead I’d rather do: Win button + R –> winword for example when applicable. But that doesn’t always work. Not by default at least. If you are a Windows command liner, Launchy will be the software for you. What it does is, it searches certain paths for executable programs, and then with few strokes it tries to guess what program you want to run. It acts similar to Google Desktop in how it shows up. After installing it, follow the two simple steps:

1- Alt + Space: Will bring up the typing menu in your face

2- Start writing your program initials.

See how it tries to complete program name. Just select the program from there and hit Enter. The program searches by default the Start Menus and Utilities folder. You can add to them as you like simply by right clicking the Search Box shown above and selecting Directories. For example, my WAMP Server is installed under C:\Wamp and won’t show up in this case. To fix things I just bring the Directories window and add the wamp directory as shown below. This will do it. You can specify File Extensions to include here as well.

So with this tool I could argue, never use Start menu again. Launchy also has the capacity for plugins, and launching programs is only one thing you can do with it. There is a lot more yet to be explored. with little work, you can append to files with it, schedule events, trigger SMS alert and more. See this link for a starter.

UPDATE: I looked for Launchy clones on Mac and Linux. For Linux there is Katapult. Not sure how good or bad it is. For Mac, there is el Launchy and QuickSilver. There is even better news however. Without a date being committed, but Launchy is on the way of being cross-platform available.

My brother in-law forwarded an email to me that he received from Epocrates, a mobile drug guide used by doctors. The email was a proactive information to the end user that currently Palm OS and Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) OS software applications, including the Epocrates applications cannot be installed or synced with Windows Vista computers as of now. The email urges users to postpone upgrade of Windows Vista until a solution is in place. The company also says they cannot commit to a deadline as the fix requires changes from both Palm and Microsoft. Below is a copy of that email:

” Dear …,
We think it’s important to let you know that many Palm® OS and Windows Mobile® (Pocket PC) OS software applications, including all Epocrates products, cannot at this time be installed or synced via computers with the new Windows Vista operating system.

We strongly recommend that if at all possible, you postpone installing Vista or upgrading to a new PC with Vista installed.

Since resolution of this problem depends upon software changes by both Palm and Microsoft, we regret that we cannot give you a firm date for a fix.
If you are already using Windows Vista, please review our FAQ for the latest recommendations from our customer support and engineering teams. Read FAQ »

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
The Epocrates Team”

This is a really bad image for the new OS. New OS should be backward compatible as much as possible, and I do understand sometimes change is unavoidable. But with Windows Mobile, they should be more proactive to avoid such messages. Same thing happened with XBox 360 which was not backward compatible. I heard there are ways to make old games run, but still, it was not ready by it self to do so.

Zudeo is the code name of the new Azureus project for high definition movies and videos downloading. Azureus is well known for their BitTorrent java based Client for Peer-to-Peer file sharing. Now they have introduced Zudeo, mainly for full length high definition movies. All you need to do is download their small client and start downloading all the movies you want.

The good about the service is that all the movies are full length, well produced with high quality, and its all legally submitted by the content owners. You can’t find any short home made movies, it’s not the place for that kind of stuff. If you are a producer or a publisher of original content, you can upload your stuff through the client for the world to watch.

The bad thing however is that the site is still small in content (this is what happens when you restrict for original stuff only!) and it still needs to get more publicity, which is what I am trying to achieve here. Another bad thing, for me at least, is that once I start downloading anything, the client start eating all my available bandwidth. Theoretically, I have a restriction on the bandwidth for around 25 kb, and I am paying quite a lot for my 256 ADSL Connection. But I still lose it all for a single download, and I find my self forced to shut it down. I am still trying to figure out whether I am doing something wrong, and I sure hope I am.

Still, I like to open it before I go to bed and chose my next morning movie before I head to work. Tomorrow is the first day of our working week by the way, God help me.

IBM have announced their new IBM Lotus SameTime 7.5 release with the support of XMPP standard, making it now reachable to hundreds of other services that follow the same standard. LiveJournal are among the communities following that standard, and ofcourse most importantly is the Google Talk. Google them selves are so happy with the release as you can see from their blog.

It is worth mentioning that since the introduction of Google Talk, and their attempt to promote the XMPP standard, MSN Messenger and Yahoo one teamed up to enable cross-messaging between the two, and just few months back it was a reality. Now this shows the direction the two instant messaging giants are following, and unless things change, the XMPP standard will never do its purpose. We have seen some light of cooperation however recently, like the Sitemap standards which was an initiative by Google now in collaboration with Microsoft and Yahoo as well. So let’s hope they will soon realize, there is no escape of worldwide standards.

Few months back, Mr. Bill Gates opened fire on the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, which is a charity project aimed at providing low cost $99 laptops for the poor children, to allow them access to the technology. Gates attacked the project, which is powered by their rival Google, saying in parts of his speech: “If you are going to go have people share the computer, get a broadband connection and have somebody there who can help support the user, geez, get a decent computer where you can actually read the text and you’re not sitting there cranking the thing while you’re trying to type,” . Very strong comments that have certainly hurt the feelings of all those dedicating their time, effort, and money to that project, and all the poor children who were starving to reach their hands to it. His comments on the crank manual powering mechanism to overcome electricity shortage as a Wind Key made it even worse. The comments Gates made caused major criticism and as some people described it, it shows clearly that “Bill Gates loves the poor, but loves Microsofr more”. Details of his previous speech can be found here.

Now that the door is open, and Microsoft received their sample units of the project, they are trying to get Windows, which is hungry for resources on the laptop. Bill doesn’t know when to stop taking everything as a game that he has to win, even when it comes to serving the poor. When he wasn’t a participant, it was a total cranking machine, and now he wants to have his brand on it. More on the story here.

It was 2002 when Bill Gates started talking about his vision for Windows Vista briefly, and the Widows File System WinFS that organizes the whole file system as database related files. Ofcourse it was 4 years later they realized they hava to give that major feature up, or else they will keep pushing the release date for ever.

Nevertheless, now that Vista is released for business mainly, geeks have already started playing, hacking, and comparing. For interested readers, I suggest you go by this comparison between Windows XP and Vista. It briefly touches on different areas of performance and security.

Now before moving on, you should be ware if you are planning to find a cracked Windows Vista version, as hackers have already started distributing a download that is supposed to be an activation for Windows Vista, being called “Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06″. The download however is actually a trojan carrier, Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze, that will install itself in the client PC. What makes the case worse is Microsoft’s official statement that Windows Vista is designed to allow third-party software to be easily included into the Vista installation DVD, and thus have warned that pirated copies could easily come with malware preloaded inside. apcmag has more on this.
