I came across this list of 50 recommended Firefox loyal users, or Mac Chrome to-be ones. And while I haven’t gone through all of them, the ones that caught my attention, or I am enjoying already are:

1- ColorZilla: One of the reasons I still open Firefox is to get the color of a certain element on a web page.

2- DownThemAll: The best download manager I have for downloading multiple files from a site at once, and with full bursting speed. Don’t expect to enjoy convenient browsing however meanwhile :).

3- Firebug: if you’re a web developer, this is simply a must. period.

4- FireFTP: Convenient and quick way to FTP to your server from within the browser. Though for large files, I would pick a stand alone FTP client.

5- Fireshot: This doesn’t only make taking screen snapshots easy. It allows further editing and annotations. For bloggers, and debuggers who want to share screen erros extremely useful. No need to launch a separate app to do little photo editing. There is a Pro commercial version of it as well.

6- IETab: This is a common statement. I only open IE when Firefox can’t open the website. Well, this plugin allows you to keep IE shut down for good. It would simply open the IE window inside a Firefox tab, allowing you to even do Microsoft update through it.

7- Web Developer: Set of tools for web developers to help altering, editing, and viewing various types of page info, like image sizes, element names, etc. You can even do resize for pages, and go through the CSS files and edit them.

8- Pencil: Sketch and prototype tool to create mockups of screenshots. While tempting, it didn’t work for me as I hoped it would. Try it out and see.

I wouldn’t prepare a top 50 Firefox extension list my self and leaveout Cooliris. The extension that would transfer your browser into a 3D Wall easy way to navigate the web. Extremely useful for photos and videos, though have been crashing frequently with me recently. By my whole PC isn’t really in one piece anymore.

Don’t ignore the remaining items, and don’t get tempted to try them all. Never feed your browser more than it can eat :)

As I was talking to my inlaw yesterday about the Cisco Teleprecense, and as I was joking about it, I realized it’s seriously bringing a whole new dimension of problems to Kuwait. Imagine this. Every holiday season big fights arise about banning celebrities from coming to Kuwait. Kuwait has authority to ban them from coming. But what if I use Teleprecense for virtual live show? Now the singer technically didn’t come to Kuwait, so what are you going to do about it?

But let’s be frank here, no matter how good, people like to see celebrities in flesh and blood. There is however another thing similar and more serious. Some popular Islamic figure have caused recently big debates about coming to Kuwait, and how they should be banned. Away from politics and religion, now what if those banned people start giving their Islamic lectures through this teleprecense, and there is no law against it. There is no law that says you cannot download and listen to this lecture, and this is just a very advanced video version of it.

New laws need to be in place that controls and governs those areas, and clarifies them. I’m not suggesting here to ban or fight this wonderful technology, not at all. But such new game changing technologies should have clear laws governing them, otherwise we will end up with same Bashar & Jassem jailing story for a comment on their site, as they were mistreated like a published newspaper. Or when it’s too late, MOC will come up with similar law to VoIP, saying this is a crime!

If you’ve been recently to some of Amazon’s product detail pages, you may have noticed the new “What We Think” box on the right side. It’s a new box for quick summary review from Amazon about the product, listing the good, the bad, and some quick numbers. While this feature is still not always available, when it is, I see it pretty useful for an initial judgment. You will most likely want to look at end user perspective if the product is reviewed well by Amazon, but not otherwise.

The fear of neutrality in the review exists ofcourse, but so far I have not noticed it. Another thing is, Amazon does not seem to be making this review about their own Kindle product. Makes sense doesn’t it?

When starting an online business, large or small, it’s important to know what the media, blogs, and other sites are saying about you. For first, this will help you understand and address user needs and concerns, and you can also take an extra step to try and reach out offering more support and thanks for the helpful review you get.

There are many online reputation tool to use and track anything about your business or brand. For a self entrepreneur however, savings in the starting phase is pretty important, or if you’re just starting a non or low profit blog but are interested naturally in anything said about your blog, and Wordpress Incoming links doesn’t always work as you hope for. For that, Google Alerts may be the best and easiest thing to get started in minutes and for FREE.

Simply login to your Google account, go to the Google Alerts page, and fill up the fields as follow:

1- Search terms: Normally your brand name. For example “BlogAllAlong OR BlogAllAlong.com”. OR is a logical operator here.
2- Type: I would suggest you chose comprehensive to include News, Web, and Blog results.
3- How Often: I select once a day, but this is up to you and how serious your business is. Usually, once a day is good enough.
4- Deliver To: I chose email, you can select also Feed option.

There, now you have daily email alerts of articles about your site or blog. Ofcourse, you can always use it to track your own reputation (if you are such a celebrity ;).
Call of Duty: World At War is available at Amazon as deal of the day for $34.98 on both PS3 and Xbox 360. That’s less than 10 KD. It’s one day offer if you want it. Frankly, I wasn’t thinking about it but the price was so tempting to resist :).

What’s great about this software, besides being light and fast to load, is the ability it gives you for editing your PDF documents with labels, signs, hyperlink areas and much more. It even allows you to create a new PDF document from scratch through a nice editor. Some features are only in the Pro version though, or otherwise label your document with “Demo” words.

NAS, or Network Attached Storage is probably the now most personal reliable, and afforadable backup and central storage solution that is both easy to use and setup, as opposed to regular back external hard drives which needs to be connected every time you want to backup, and can only talk to limited number of computers at once. Worse, my experience and from what I saw and read, most these external hard drives have a tedency of failure after 1 or 2 years. So much for a backup ehh?

For several years I waited for the right backup solution to come, after my terrible Maxtor experience. The concept of NAS was so appealing to me, however lacked the good implementation of it. This was until my friend and I found the 1 TB Netgear ReadyNAS Duo.

1 Tb of Gigabit ethernet network attached SATA storage, with a secondary optional slot for a mirror one, giving you extra data availability. Unfortunately however, the secondary disk does not seem to add anything to read performance. The price tag was really what kept me thinking for a couple of days, until my friend called and said his PC drive was dead. This is when price tag becomes no issue. There were 5 pieces left only at the time on Amazon, later that day, 2 were already sold.

And if you’re getting a Gigabit ethernet device, you might as well utilize the G side of it and get your self a Gigabit switch. Mine was the D-Link 8 Port Desktop Switch, while my friend went for the NetGear one. It’s hard to tell them apart without seeing them both in action, but when reaching out for the NAS folder, I do notice a slight tiny delay which he says does not occure to him. Not sure though. Either ways, file transfer remains pretty fast and reliable.

So What’s So Good About this NAS?

1- Backup solution for unlimited number of home desktops and laptops. Works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.

2- Central shared data among all devices. Use less storage for same amount of data, with central advantage. Useful for media files and documents you want available across different devices.

3- Streaming: The NAS comes with built-in streaming capabilities that could allow you central storing of your videos and photos, then go and enjoy them on your favorite player device. I have personally not utilized this feature enough yet, and friends tell me streaming off their PC remains faster.

4- Quick Recovery: Say primary SATA drive fails. If you have taken the step of the secondary drive, simply pull out the primary drive, and replace it with the secondary one. In few minutes, you’re good to go.

5- QUIET: As opposed to external drives I’ve seen, this one is so quiet, personally I like it.

6- Primary Documents Storage Location

This last point is what made most of the difference to me, and while it applies better to desktops rather than laptops, it still is the best thing I’m getting of my NAS. Shortly after using the NAS for backup, I took my friend advise and made the NAS the default Documents folder for all my work, so that My Documents folder would point to the NAS storage rather than my PC. It’s automatically mirrored, and centrally stored to be read by other devices. No need for schedule backup and sync tasks. Much of a relief.

To do so, you will first need to do Directory Mapping. Simpy go on Windows to any directory window, clicks Tools -> Map Network Drive. From there, simply specify the drive name you want to use, say V:, and the file path it maps to, which should be the relative documents directory at your NAS as shown below:

Next step is to make the My Documents folder on Windows point to that location. Simply while in the My Documents folder, right click on any empty area and select properties. From there, change the Target Folder Location to the new Mapped Drive, V: in our case.

There is a nice article about mapping Mac drives here.

Now, your documents are directly written to the NAS, and if you have a secondary drive, you got your self double the reliability. You will need also (if you want) to change settings of some programs to point to the new location. For example iTunes, or any other download program that takes default location. Make sure you change it to your liking, and you can aslo create separate folders at the NAS for separate purposes. Say Media, documents, backup (for laptops for instance).

Does It Really Help?

I got it back in August, and just last Thursday, my PC finally decided to quit living. It would simply restart everytime I reboot, after a glimpse of a blue screen, I couldn’t read it in ten times. I had to video record the screen, replay it in slow motion and pause to read it! Mr. Bean stuff, but it does the job.

Blue screen message wasn’t very helpful (as usualy), and nothing worked and I thought reformat is fastest resolution. For the first time ever I was totally ready for it, and except for the programs I had to reinstall, I just mapped the netowork drive and targeted My Documents to it, and almost all my data was back. I thanked God I got it, and thought of sharing it thus with you.

Does it have problems?

NO. Just kidding. Ofcourse it does. Here are some issues I face from using the NAS:

1- Minor slight delay in accessing files as opposed to when they are stored locally. Pretty minor stuff for me.

2- Lack of some program support. Some programs like Sony Vegas studios refused to work with network drive locations, and only worked with mapped network drives. Some others even refused the mapped network drives for some reason.

3- Some programs run slow when trying to access and list files from the NAS. For instance, GIMP takes a long time to list folder files before savin when accessing a NAS folder. iTunes Library browsing also seems to get extremely slow when using NAS for it’s storage. The famous Mac Time Machine also does not allow NAS drives for backup by default, and even when I tried the solution, it also failed to back in my case. Sure there is way, but didn’t give it much thought yet. I expect it needs time for companies to give full attention to this technology, and support it better.

4- Executing some tasks like Unzipping large files will take enormous time if done on NAS. For me, unzipping 70 MB of intensily zipped files took over an hour (and failed eventually). In such cases, simply move the zip file to your local machine and do the unzipping.

5- As mentioned above, it would’ve been much better if this mirrored disk was used for reading improvements rather than just a backup. But it doesn’t seem to be the case.

WATCH IT: The Amazon page of NetGear NAS has a Watch It In Action link you can follow for nice demonstration of the product.

The bug of the eight digits with Wataniya came back yesterday, but this time it has evolved into something worse. Not only I couldn’t make a call at the intersection, but I kept calling while going forward to Fahaheel and I got like 5 consecutive “We cannot redirect your call, please add #2 infront of the number and dial again” Ofcourse, I’m calling Batriq @ 1888000, so it’s already changed to new numbering plan. I then got another 5 busy or idle responses, the type that happens when there is coverage problems. The problem started from 2nd Ring Road & Fahaheel intersection, and went on till Cairo St. #35 a Fahaheel Road. Such a long way to call it a cell handover problem isn’t it? Unless ofcourse if the edge of the cells run all along this Fahaheel Road area, which would be simply bad design and/or worse installation and configuration.

I wonder what happened to the guy roaming the world over the red carpet really :)

This is a follow up to the disappointing first fix to enforce Google.com as default search engine. While it have worked for few days on all browsers, today and all of a sudden, Google Chrome bar default searches took me back to Google.com.kw. I don’t want you for God’s sake! Do I need to give away my nationality for a decent Google.com search?

Luckily, I have quickly found another way. To do so, click on the spanner icon in the top right corner of Google Chrome. and select Options.

Then, under Basics tab, click on Manage from Default search:

If you see an item here with keyword Google.com.kw, remove it. It would probably have (Default) beside it, indicating it’s the default address bar search engine. Now look for another existing Google entry, or Add a new one if no one exist. In my case, I found and edited this Google entry:

Alter they keyword here to your likings, and the URL to whats shown in the image: “http://www.google.com/search?q=%s”

Click OK when done, select the engine you just edited and click on the Make Default button on right side of the pop-up screen. Close, Close and you should be done :)

Hope that’s the last of it.

NOTE: At time of Google.com.kw launch, this same solution did not use to work as it should. It would take you back then to Google.com, but if you use the browser default Google search engine you would land again on .KW domain. Next day, it was working properly. So I’m not sure if this same link works the same way on domains other than .KW. Let me know how it goes with you.

UPDATE: Bad news. Google.com.kw is enforced on me back again and I assume many others when searching using Chrome Address Bar. Same trick does not work. Firefox Google Search Engine and address bar both dont have the same problem. Looks like we’re gonna need a hack for it ;/. Thank you Google for not doing evil. Thank you.

UPDATE 2: I have tried to contact Google Chrome feedback for reporting this behavior. Not the best place, but it is a place that they will read at least.

UPDATE 3: I found the solution for Chrome Google Default Search. You can read it here.

“http://blogallalong.com/<?php bloginfo(’rss2_url’); ?>”

I didn’t know what’s the problem at the time, and why the PHP code was not being executed. I put it on my long todo list and forgot about it until early this morning. You know how sometimes you wake up from bed for no good reason and launch the editor?

I recalled then I have switched to Widgets sidebar a while ago, and as I expected I used the Text Widget for the Subscriptions box. When I should’ve used the added PHP Code Widget Plugin. I already have it used, but didn’t notice this box has PHP code in it during migration.

I’m not sure why this widget isn’t included by default in Wordpress, and as I see it, it’s better to have one default box that handles both Text and PHP code, which is what the PHP Code Widget does. I think I’m gonna stick to it for all text and PHP widgets.

I was really surprised to see this “Signup Now. Your information will be confidential” box as I was browsing the 6alabat.com page, as I still recall the day they sold us out for spam.

So I thought maybe that’s my mistake I didn’t read their privacy policy clearly. I went on to their Privacy Policy page, and at the bottom of the page, under Usage of Information you find this:

Or was it a judgmental order back then? I’m confused!

Thank you, but no thank you. I have made my mind back then. No more 6alabat for me.

I’m not sure if it’s something I did, but the force of Google Kuwait is gone for me.

Are you still being forced to it?

Google today have released and pushed to the people of Kuwait their new Google.com.kw domain. If you have gone already to Google.com, you may have well noticed as I did you’re being redirected to the Google.com.kw domain instead. While this is not a Kuwait only search engine as we intended to do with Q8Ba7th, it is a global search engine biased for Kuwait results. Try searching for “العربي” for example on Google global and Google Kuwait:

Google.com Results

Google.com.kw Result

You can clearly see Al-Arabi sport club showing in first few results in Google.com.kw. Yes it is more targeted, if you wish to have such results, keep it your default search engine. I have to say however, I was not imporessed with Google’s “Do No Evil” way of pushing the new search engine in my face, and with an ugly Arabic interface. The side options link are barely readable, and getting English results from left to right is definitely not the best way to browse the results. Not what fairy tales would tell you about how Google takes +2 points difference in font size as a serious unforgivable mistake. The least they could’ve done is maintained my English interface. That way I won’t feel more confused.

I am also still wondering how can I set Google.com as the default search engine. I can go to Google.com.kw main page, click on “Google.com In English” link. However I want the default Google Chrome address bar to give me results from Google.com. How can I do that now?

WONDER IF: I also wonder if that’s got anything to do with Google.com.sa agent calling me to offer changing my Adwords account to Saudi Arabia billing address few weeks ago as Google has no presence in Kuwait, saying he can manage it that way. Was it an attempt to take away Kuwait Adwords accounts before they can take control over it? Maybe. But I wouldn’t care either ways.

It takes long time, and the progress count is not accurate at all then. Another thing is that, for all the strength it has, it remains a web browser and thus it’s more resource intensive.

Another nice option was WinSCP Windows FTP client as well. Pretty good for SFTP and updating files on the fly, and it even has a terminal for firing up commands the old fashioned way. You can also change file permissions right from the editor through a GUI interface.

The latest FTP Client I’m using and finding also so much attractice is the FileZilla. It is also capable of SFTP, file updates, and file permission changing. It does not come with a command terminal however. The good thing on the other hand is, FileZilla is an open source, multi-platform client so you can get used to it and use it every where.

Which one is your favorite?

The Amazon wishlist is a really handy tool for me and many others, though most people use it for it’s intended purpose, which is let others know what to buy you as a gift, it still remains the easiest place to keep my wish list. Though I personally still believe a bit of Ajax would make it much more easy to use, as it currently is a bit time consuming to manage, it still is better than storing your wanted items in a separate sheet somewhere else.

Now, and I’m not sure really for how long it’s been there, Amazon have improved their wishlist to allow you inclusion of items outside of Amazon site. Basically, you bookmark any page on the web on your Amazon Universal Wishlist, specify the price, as there is no intelligence in it, and add any comments you may like. Not very much advanced universal wishlist I know, but does the job if you’re looking frequently for stuff outside of Amazon.

Outside? So why does Amazon encourage it?

Increased customer loyalty through the added value of service

We’re basically letting Amazon know what are we planning to buy from other shops. I.e., the money that’s not gonna go in their pockets. Have you ever filled a survey where it says if you don’t shop here, where do you usually go? This is pre-emptive type of it. Before you buy, not after. And they know from where exactly. They may setup an ambush for you if it’s a pretty good deal. Naah, just kidding :). But it is providing them with valuable information if people do use it intensively.

I had this weird problem yesterday knowing I have not done any video setting changes, nor recall a pending software installation. When I start the PS3, green light comes up and then nothing happens. Insert the Game into the slot, blue light blinks and again nothing happens. No video, no sound, and no, it’s not output setting problem as many others have guessed in forums. Try to assign your wireless controller and you’ll know. It doesn’t. If it was on, output and controller assigning I assume should be two separate things.

Symptoms:

On start, PS3 Green light comes up but nothing happens. No sound or video

Insert game or any disc into the slot, blue blinks and again nothing happens

Try to assign wireless controller, nothing happens.

Try restart the console, unplug it for a while, or keep it on for long time again does not solve the problem.

I was hoping for some reason it’s replaceable hardware failure rather than software one in a closed box like this. I didn’t know about the system restore feature.

Solution:

With the PS3 in Standby mode (Red light on), press and hold the Start button until you hear a single beep, followed by double beeps.

Connect the controller using USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.

Now, the system restore screen (or whatever they call it) will come up like this

You have several options here for restoring the system, some will unfortunately wipe up all your data, others will make you lose the file naming. For me, I tried the option top-bottom and eventually had to do the Restore PS3 System. Luckily, all I had were demos, trailers, and game saves. only game I was really playing now was Prince of Persia. I felt terrible still though, but much better than if I was playing Ninja Gaiden or MGS right? Or let’s say a game Fallout!

Sharing it for others with same misfortune. Guess we’ll need the PS3 included in the backup plan then.

“Some parts of Apple’s 32-point rebuttal say that the company was being truthful. (No, it hasn’t been tested against Kuwaiti machbos and others yet). Watch the video below of the robot manually and intelligently assembling a camera from small parts.

Dear VIVA,

I have came across the news you are starting real operation on Dec 3rd, which is a great news when many people seem to be complaining about existing telecom operators’ unreliable coverage. Hopefully your firm can raise up the standards in the market.

I am trying to reach your site now as I did several times before, however this is what I get

Which made me wonder about your regular site working hours. Would you be so kind to include them in your next massive public ad campaign so that we can see what you have?

Kind Regards,

Bashar

P.S.: Somehow I don’t see the coverage problems going

Nothing better to do in weekend right! :). The result however was contrary to last time. I called 3 consecutive times, twice at stationary (remember physics?), and then once while driving. What was different? Could it be under heavy load at night, as I usually call at night, and this time it was Saturday morning? Maybe. This will have to wait until next week :)

The one thing I’m sure of now is, I remember I frequently faced similar problem before calling Batriq from the same area and time.
